Our final day at Diamond M Ranch, July 31,2008

Our time here is almost over. We plan to leave around 7 in the morning to begin to head east. Don/Connie are going with us while Andy/Charlotte and Ron/Nancy are staying and moving to another RV park for a few days to fish. Our freezers are all full so guess they will be canning or smoking their fish they catch!

It is a gorgeous day today and high's are probably now in the 70's...first time since we have been here! We have been busy today putting things away and getting laundry caught up and put away. We went into town to go to the grocery store and made a few other stops. One is our new "favorite" place..you guessed it! The Moose is Loose Bakery! We had to get a roll and some cookies to snack on for the trip home. :)

Most of our work is done--Bill is napping... and we are having a halibut supper tonite! Our friends, Ron and Nancy have been busy today smoking halibut! We are going to have smoked, grilled and baked halibut tonite for supper. The rest of us will contribute whatever.... can't wait!

Our plans are to head to Tok,Alaska tomorrow ...it will be about 350 miles. They have wifi there as we stayed there before we went to Fairbanks. So we will be on the road again! We hope the weather stays with us but none of us are looking forward to the heat ..... we complain because its cool but don't want to go back to the heat either!

So until next time!

Monday July 28

Monday morning rolled around and Jeff left with Andy and Don to go salmon fishing. They got back around 11 or so and Jeff got his limit of 3 salmon! Boy was he excited and so relieved to catch his fish! He cleaned them and we freezer packed them and of course he had to mark them "Special.... " Duncan's Kenai Salmon! Do you think he will ever open the package's??? HAHAHa, Jeff!

Megan, Bill and I went to the store for some more packing supplies and got a few groceries. We spent the day smoking some fish for the others and hanging out here with Charlotte and Connie too. The sun began to shine some and it was a pretty nice day.

Jeff had the fishing bug for sure and wanted to go out before they left around noon on Tuesday so he went out again Monday evening but didn't get anything. Good thing.... he had gotten his limit that morning! ;)

But Tuesday am he just knew he was going to get his limit again but he lost 3 big ones on the pole..... He was ready to stay for a few days longer but plans had been made so they got ready to leave. We took them to the visitors center in Kenai to meet their van/bus for the ride to Anchorage.

Bill smoked fish for the others the rest of the day and we just hung around here. Nancy came back from fishing so her and I rode to a quilt shop in the country.... it was sooo neat and way back in the woods! The lady had a really neat shop and I picked up some Alaska fabric to make some placemats..... another project to do!

We ate supper last night again outside as the day became just gorgeous! It was nice to sit outside and relax a little bit even after supper.

This am Ron/Nancy and her dad,Don and Andy went on another halibut charter with some friends of Ron/Nancy.... not sure where they are putting all their halibut they get as their freezers are full!

Well, that about sums up our past few days....the clouds are out a little bit today but the sun is still shining...it is too be nice the rest of the week....hope so as we will leave here early Friday am for Kansas.

Until next time!

Sunday's adventure/ Halibut fishing

Sunday morning we got up early and headed to Ninilchik around 40 miles south of here for our halibut cruise. We got to the charter office and waited until they arrived. They loaded our "stuff" up and off we went to the ocean! It was drizzling and continued for the rest of the day but not really heavy. We rode in a fairly large boat with 2 other girls joining the 4 of us. A funny thing they had the same last name as we did! Their parents live in Soldotna for about 2 months on the Kenai River and then spend the rest of the year in Lake Havusu, Az. Small world>>>> we think maybe they are related way down the line.....

Anyway.... we rode about 5 miles out or so but we could still see the Cook Inlet and the mountains all day. It became just cloudy at times but still very cool. We all wore our heavier coats....darn...I brought my earmuffs just for the cruise on Saturday and Sunday and then forgot to bring them! Bill still teases me about that! CRS!!!! :)
So the guide baited the hooks and 3# lead weight for us as we were fishing for halibut at the bottom of the ocean. One of the gals got a fish first. Then Jeff...he was sooo excited! I don't think he realized how much strength a 25# fish feels like!
Bill was next catching his fish and kept it although it was smaller. When I caught mine I was trying to take a picture of Bill's and the guide got mine and said I had a big fish on!!!! OH MY GOSH!!! I got a 55# halibut!Megan's fish were about in the 25# range and she wasn't sure she was going to get any! Finally they started to bite and we all got our limit of 2 each. What a lot of meat we got!

The rest of the fish were pretty good size...around the 20# range but my second fish was about a 45# halibut! Our freezer is now full of halibut from the 4 of us! Towards the end of the fishing the drizzle got heavier and heavier. We didn't care..we were so excited at having caught the halibut and being able to take some home. It was alot of fun and we all really enjoyed it!

Catching up again

I wrote last night and added pictures and then hit send... it didn't send. The wifi here in the park is becoming horrible after 4 PM ..... (time to leave, huh???)
It's ridiculous we can't get on and there are not that many in the park now. Oh well.....

So let me tell you about our weekend! We had a fantastic day on Seward. We left around 7:30AM and drove to Seward about 90miles from here. The day was cloudy and cool when we left and some drizzle. By the time we got to Seward the sun was beginning to shine and it was just cloudy with sun peeking through for the rest of the day! We got on the catamaran and found our places we felt we could see the best. Megan and Jeff stayed up on top mos of the time until it got colder.
We saw sea otters, Dall porpoises, a "superpod" of about 30 Killer whales,~~Wow! What a sight! ~~ Humpback whales, an eagle, Puffins, various species of sea gulls, jellyfish, Stellar sea lions rookery and some other birds I was able to mark off in my bird book!
Then we went to the Holgate Glacier! Wow! The pictures just do not do them justice! The ice is sooo blue and we stayed around 25 minutes or so and actually got to see it "calve"... break off into the ocean. There is where it got really cold and windy and we saw jellyfish! They told us the temp was around 40 but the water temp. was about 20 degrees. We got back to the docks around 5 and then ate supper and headed home. What a great day!

Friday night July 25

We have had a busy day today......
Thursday, Bill went fishing again and came home with nothing..... so many stories and guidance but nothing in the net..... some say the fish aren't in yet some say the weather is too cool yet.....
I cleaned most of the morning and got the laundry done...just everyday chores anymore! It rained and was cool all day so chili was on tap for supper! It was pretty good.

We went to the airport in Kenai to get Megan/Jeff around 11:30 last night and it was still light out! The plane was on time and it took only minutes to get their luggage and we left to go home! We set the bed up in the living room before we left so they could go to bed right when we got home. It was almost 12:30 before we settled down and we had an early morning this am. It is wonderful to have them here!!!

This am after we got around we went down to the fishing place where they go fishing so Jeff could try his luck fishing. It was shoulder to shoulder with people so we went to another place and Jeff got to try his luck. No luck for him either. The only thing he got was a wet wader! He took a deeper than he thought step and got his jeans etc. wet! We came back for lunch and then decided to go to Kenai so they could see the dipnetters fish. We watched them for about 45 minutes. We then drove to Soldotna to see the chainsaw "creations"... then came home. We all went out to eat for Charlotte's birthday..... a small restaurant about 3 miles from here. It was great...we all had good food!

Saturday, we are leaving around7:30 in the am to go to our Kenai Fjord tour for the day. We are all excited to do this! We hope to see whales and lots of other animals.

Sunday, we have chartered a halibut fishing trip.... so we will have a couple of busy days.... stay tuned!

Until next time!

Wednesday am, July 23

It is another cloudy rainy day in Alaska! But the weatherman said this weekend is to be nice again with the sun coming to visit! Yahoo!!!!

It has been cloudy since Monday and little sun....

Sunday evening we all decided to go try out Cold Stone Creamery in Soldatna after we ate supper. It was delicious!

Monday, the guys went fishing again and Bill didn't catch anything but the others didn't catch much either... the fish aren't finding them or something!

I sewed most of the afternoon and evening...it has been great having the sewing machine set up in the living room and being able to leave it up and not have to take it down every few days. I have gotten most of my projects done that I wanted to do here so that is an accomplishment! I started on some placemats that are called the "The Cotton Theory".... sew and quilt as you go so they are done when you have them together.... I am using fall fabric on one side and Christmas on the other.... in some different colors for me... getting out of my box actually! They are not hard to do but you have to really concentrate or lose your place!

Charlotte and I went to town yesterday morning and found a few Alaska gift shops..... we decided it was time for a donut at a bakery called "The Moose is Loose"....that place is heaven!!! So we were at the counter and the guys came in.... so they joined us before we seperated. Charlotte and I found some more souvenirs and also stopped at a greenhouse...OH MY GOSH!!!the flowers there were just gorgeous and so HUGE!!! The hanging baskets were taller than I am! They had so many different flowers in them and so pretty! I hope to get back there and take some pictures before we leave so I have proof! :) All the flowers here are so big and doing very well when the sun comes out to stay! You can tell a difference about their growing patterns when its rainy and cool.

The park had a potluck last night and of course it really began to rain when we headed over there for supper...so we ate salmon and then left.... they had it under a tent and it was cold and wet... the line of people was so long I'm surprised they had enough food left for everyone.....

Bill is fishing with the guys this am... Connie made it back from her visit with her new grandson and is sleeping right now.... She spent the night in the Anchorage airport and took a flight this am to Kenai. Anxious to talk to her and see pictures of the new little one.

So that is about our news for now.... have a good Wednesday or what is left of it for you!

Until next time!

Pictures of our rigs in the park

Pictures of our rigs in the park

Chainsaw competition pictures

Dipnetting pictures

Sunday morning July 20

Well, I had written a complete blog this am and for some reason it didn't show up..... sometimes this wifi in the park isn't all that it is cracked up to be and it is frustrating. We can't get on at all in the evening's anymore....figure there are too many people trying to do the same thing as we are! So I will try again and if this shows up twice...sorry about that! I probably won't even remember what I wrote the first time!

Friday morning the guys went fishing so I stayed around and cleaned and got my laundry done for another week. Andy and Don limited out so they had fish to clean. Bill had a couple online but they got away... (I know...fishy story!) :)
Charlotte canned fish that afternoon and we all did "just stuff".....
Late that afternoon, one of the owners' sons came by with a notice that they were having a salmon/steak supper with 5 kinds of salmon...can you name them all? Not sure if I can or not.... they have "color" names as well as their names.....
The meal was good and the salmon was yummy! After supper we decided to take adrive into town and a few miles beyond to go to a chainsaw competition that was going on for about 3 days here. It was amazing to see what they were designing. We really like the eagle although it didn't win anything prizes.

Saturday morning rolled around and Andy was smoking their salmon. Someone has to be around all day to watch the smoker with the temps and to change the racks around once in a while. So it became an all day affair. Charlotte and I went to Kenai to a Farmer's Market and Safeway to get a few things. The Farmers' Market was nicer than the one in Solotna. They have a store here called Three Bears.... its alot like Sam's but open to the public. All things in big pkg... bulk size.
We all decided not to go to the potluck on Saturday and to do our "potluck"...we smoked chicken and everyone brought something so it was great!

Bill and I went back to the chainsaw competition thinking they might auction off the eagle and see what it brought but some of the things weren't even sold at auction. I hope a bear will make its way home with me before we leave here. Stay tuned!
While at the auction and walking around we ran into a family from "home"...Stockton... they were having a brothers/sisters trip to Alaska. They will be here for 10 days. We knew they were coming but wasn't sure when or where they were staying. It was strange seeing someone we knew in a place so far away.
On our way over to the chainsaw competition we took a swing by the mouth of the river to check out the dipnetters.... OH MY GOD!!! You wouldn't believe how many people there were down there.... the line to the bathroom was a block long. Check out the pictures and if you can enlarge them...do...... it is so amazing seeing them down there and fishing...the tide was out so that is why they were so far out.

Our big entertainment for the day yesterday was to sit around the "tent" and visit while the smoker did its job. Don is smoking his salmon today so it will be another all day affair.

We are doing things around here today and the traffic is so unreal in town so we will probably not venture too far today.... I always have things to finish and get done before Megan/Jeff come on Thursday night. We are really looking forward to seeing them and wish they could stay longer with us.... can't wait to share this area with them.....

Our time here is growing short and the time is slipping by fast! We are not ready to hit the high temp's of the lower 48 yet but ready to get back to our kids and spend time with them and the new little one to arrive soon!

Well, that is about all for now and please check out the pictures!
until next time!

Another rainy day in Soldotna

This week has been a blur it seems. I looked at the blog and it has been almost a week since I've written! Sorry about that...so much for the daily blog visits!

Saturday eve. we went to a potluck here at the park...the park furnished the fish and everyone brought the rest.....lots of good food....it was up on a "viewing deck" and was kind of chilly so people didn't tarry long after supper. The park is almost full and has been all month..... this is their busiest month I'm sure. Although downtown someone told us that the businesses are down about 40%!!!! But there sure seems to be alot of people around.

Sunday morning after church we kind of hung around the camp for the rest of the day.

Monday morning Bill decided to go to a fishery place and get some salmon to can and smoke. We bought 5 whole salmon that were fresh off the boat. In fact they bring them in and then take them immediately. The people then sell them to stores I guess...I'm not sure what they do with them other than that. There are lots of places like that here..... commercial fishermen who sell to companies. But these fish were fresh out of the ocean. So we canned 13 pints of salmon and smoked 6 pints of salmon. That took most of our day doing that.

I have been sewing more on our quilt and have begun putting it together in blocks.... it has gone together pretty fast. Been working on a couple of other things in the meantime too. It's nice to have my sewing machine set up but the rig looks kind of messy with my table set up and not the space we usually have.

Tuesday was another cloudy and sprinkled some. Charlotte and I ran into town for some groceries. It never ceases to amaze me about the prices of groceries here. They are high so I KNOW when we get home we will enjoy the cheap prices, right?

Wednesday morning I had a hair appt. and am good for another month now. It had been 2 months since I had my hair cut and colored..it really needed both. Now my secret is out! haha!!! Bill has been piddling around the "camp" we have set up and not doing much as his knee is feeling better but he doesn't want to do anything until he had gone to the dr. Wednesday evening we went to the mouth of the Kenai river and watched the dip netters fish. The commercial boats were coming in and it was just like a fleet of ships coming in..... it was so neat to see! I have uploaded some pictures for you to see! Just watching all the people using dip nets to get fish is something to see too! Men,women and kids all ages were down on the beach trying to catch the fish. In Alaska, the head of household can have 25 fish and each member can have 10. So they fish until they get their limit using the nets.... granted to them by right of Alaskan resident status.

Thursday was our "dr. appt" day..... Bill went to the dr. this am and had his stitches taken out. He also had 55cc of fluid drained from his knee and a cortisone shot. His shot has been bothering him the most today. The dr. told him he has no ACL and not much of anything else in his knee except the knee cap. He said he would need a knee replacement and wouldn't have any trouble with it if he gets his muscles built up. He has had Megan get a small bicycler and its on it way so he can excerise on the way home. So he is hoping to go fishing on Friday. Everyone who went today got their limit quickly so the reds are in!

I had a chiropractor appt. today too and was in good shape...Charlotte had one also so we made a morning of it! We stopped by a bakery that was out of this world! Our friends told us about it and we stopped today and had a roll and a break! We will definitely be going back there! :)

This afternoon we hadn't done much until Don and Andy got back from fishing and so now they are canning Andy's fish. We made some vegetable soup for supper in the crock pot so we will eat when the fish are done.

Well, that about catches us up again for this week. I hope Bill gets to fish tomorrow and I will clean and do laundry...exciting huh? There is a chainsaw competition in town for the next few days... we want to go see that...stay tuned!

Until next time!

Saturday morning

We spent a busy day yesterday cleaning up a "small catastrophe"..... boy has my spelling gone by the wayside! Yesterday morning Bill went outside to empty and clean out the black tank and had some help...... By mistake the bath/washer tank valve was closed. So when I did a load of laundry yesterday afternoon the water from the washer ran from it to the shower over the steps, down into the kitchen and got to the edge of the carpet.... Thank goodness we were home and it didn't even get to stay long....so we spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning, drying and working on getting things back in order. I had just cleaned really well yesterday morning and so my floors got cleaned again..... Things happen!!! We were just so glad we had extra help and thankful we were there to stop the water immediately instead of really soaking the floor and carpet. Oh, the adventures of living in an RV!

Our friends next door, had a problem with their 1-pc. washer so they took it out and it began working again..so the guys to the rescue again and took it out and put it back in...but we got to spend a nice sunny (finally!) afternoon watching the washer spin and do its thing! Sounds exciting huh? :) But hopefully its fixed now too.

This am Bill and I went to Kenai to pick up a pkg. at the post office and then stop by the store for a few things. There is a potluck tonite here at the park so we will be going to that. The guys are going fishing this afternoon and the women are on their own I guess!

Not much planned for the rest of the weekend.... we will just see what happens!
At least the sun is shining here now and maybe it will stay for a while!

Until next time!

Thursday pm

We can check another cool day off the calendar here in Soldotna.... it has been cool and cloudy and we all welcome the sun when it decides to appear.... some days around 5 or so.... I guess we are all waiting for the nice "warm" weather and it may not get here!

The fish are just beginning to slowly trickle in so probably next week they will arrive since it seems everyone is just waiting the days out to fish.

Bill is doing better each day with his knee although yesterday he probably wouldn't have agreed with me! I think he thought since he did so well partially Tuesday afternoon (while the numbing "stuff") was still in there this was going to be a breeze recuperating time.... not so.... he is walking better and has put away the crutches late this afternoon but now used a borrowed "cane"..... At least he is walking better and able to get around better. The dr. called today and told him it sounded like he was on schedule with what he did and to try some range of motion excercises.

Yesterday afternoon I spent the afternoon cutting fabric out for our bedroom quilt I bought last week. I finally was able to get started on it this afternoon.

Went back to the chiropractor this am... my pelvic area is still slipping but this week I don't have clamming on the schedule so maybe it will stay in place! I also have excercises to do! Fun, fun! --NOT!!!

Not much else going on here.... we are all getting tired of sitting around and not doing much but nothing much else to do .... Bill is not going too far just yet....

So that about catches us up for this time!
Until next time!

Bill is home now minus some tissue!

Bill made it through his surgery in good shape this am. The dr. told us he took out quite a bit of "junk" and he is now bone against bone in the knee. He will probably have to have a knee replacement soooner than the dr. thought. Bill will know when he is ready he said. He also said he had quite a bit of arthritus in his knee. He is now in the recliner with his knee up and the knee wrapped up and on an ice wrap attached to a "motor" in a cooler which the nurse told him it could become a "great beer cooler".... :) (sorry for the long run-on sentence!)

Anyway, we spent most of the day at the hospital which was very nice and the staff was really nice. I was really impressed with the dr. also.... he took a long time explaining what he found and answered all my questions. Not in a hurry as some always are.

So now the recooperation begins....stay tuned.... as he is already saying "I need this and that"... haha!!! It MAY get a little crowded in this rig before the end of the week! haha!!!!

So that is about the extent of our day today. Andy had to go to the dentist this am and got a tooth recapped..... good day for the economy of Soldotna! :)

Until next time!

Another week slipped by

Here is it the 4th of July and it has been raining off and on all day. It only reached about 56 today. We are in Alaska after all! :)

We have had a busy week this week with some not so fun!

Monday, Bill went clamming at Clam Gulch with Don and Andy. They came home with a bunch of clams..... Bill crawled out of the truck and couldn't walk. He had popped something in his knee....his "good" knee. It seemed like it was just dangling..... I called a couple of medical offices and found an Orthopedic dr. clinic in Soldotna. He didn't get in until Thursday am. So he has been limping all week and had to even go to the chiropractor on Wednesday. He had favored one leg and his hip went out.

Tuesday, we stayed around the RV most of the day. Andy, Don and Connie went clamming again and got a few clams. I decided to give it a try on Wednesday. Our other friends from McPherson, Ron and Nancy and her dad got here Tuesday afternoon. We were glad to see them. They were glad to be here as they had left last Sat. from McPherson and arrived late Tuesday afternoon. Long drive!

Wednesday, we(Don,Andy, Connie and I ) left early and drove down to Ninilchik.... we had a ball but it was work! Some of our muscles hadn't been used in a long time! Andy, Connie and I finally got together and worked and between the 4 of us we had over 160 clams! We were filthy dirty and thank God we had gotten hip waders to get down on our hands and knees. There were tons of people out there... we worked from about 8 to about 11 before the tide came back in. I didn't think I was going to be able to get back up the beach! I had gone to the chiropractor on Tuesday afternoon to put my hips back in place! My right leg was 1/2" shorter than the other one! Boy, was I sore Wednesday night! I figured I wouldn't even been able to walk Thursday but got up and felt pretty good! It took us all afternoon to get the clams cleaned and then we canned 13 1/2 pints of clams! YUMMY!!!!! Can't wait to fix some delicious clam chowder!

Bill had planned on going with Andy, Don and Connie on Thursday for halibut. But instead he went to the dr. He has some "junk" in his knee and will have surgery on it on Monday. They will do it orthoscopically so he will not be down long. Then he can get back to fishing..... hopefully..the fish will come in. They haven't started yet. They each got their limit of halibut- 2 each-- so they canned or froze their halibut. Ron took Bill's place.

Today has been a quiet 4th of July for us and it really hasn't seemed like the 4th at all. No fireworks going off and haven't even heard of any displays at all for the evening..of course it would have to be around 1:30 in the am as that is when it gets dark!
We fixed some halibut, steaks, salmon, smoked salmon, striper and a huge amount of other food for supper tonite! We ate outside under the canopy ...... the food was great! So we did have a picnic!

So that about catches us up for this week! We are going to Homer tomorrow with Ron and Nancy and do some sightseeing and try to find the Newmar group who are there for the weekend.

Have a good weekend!
Until next time!
