Catching up again!
Good morning!
I can't believe it has been almost a month again since I've last written! The time has really flew by and we have been busy as well....... so here are the highlights of some of the things we have done since I've last written!
The last Friday in January our friends, Larry/Sherry/Larry/Earlene decided to try to cross the hand-drawn ferry across the Rio Grande River at Los Ebanos. So we drove to this small town and to the ferry.... it seems the river was up 2 ft. that day and the ferry was not running... but we were able to see the ferry and look to the other side (Mexico)... see pictures below or above...(not sure where they will post--sometimes this program has a mind of its own!)This is a hand drawn ferry that you can either walk or drive your car on the ferry and cross the Rio Grande River to Mexico. We were going to take the ferry and then have lunch at a small restaurant. No one was there at the ferry so we decided to do Plan B...... Larry/Sherry are birdwatchers also and they knew a place where a couple volunteer for the winter at a birding site. It is close to the river and back in some trees. She has put out feeders and feeds the birds peanut butter, oranges and bird food...she said she has about 25 different kinds of birds coming in from pigeons to orieles.....she has about a dozen plastic chairs to sit and watch them come to feed.....it was so neat to see so many birds and watch them eat...they know when she feeds them and then come in.... we saw some gorgeous orieles that are native to only Texas and they were huge with such deep orange color and black beaks and spots on their chest! So after spending almost an hour watching them we left and drove on to Falcon Lake about 65 miles from our park. It was a big lake and had some camping sites. Close to the visitors center, a couple of workkampers had set up their own birding site.... they had enclosed on one side a "wind break tarp" so you could sit there and watch the birds come in...... it was fun to see different birds there also! So we had a birding day! We drove back to Mercedes and had a Mexican dinner before going home!
January 23rd, we went to a Killer Bees hockey game. This is a minor league and one night a month they have a Winter Texan night which you can get tickets for $6 each instead of the $18 regular..... also they had $1 hotdogs, drink and popcorn! what a deal! :) We didn't understand some of what was going on but it was fun to watch and see......
We moved over to another RV park on the other side of the valley on Jan.31st .....it is called Hidden Valley RV Park..... where our friends, Ron/Nancy/John/Patsy are..... this park is mostly member owned sites and we are renting for 2 months here. We have a double concrete full site! It is so nice and clean here and the sites are huge! Now if the weather would cooperate it would be great! We have sat outside a few days and enjoyed the outside. We have met our neighbors on each side one being a park model and the couple are from North Dakota. The other couple is renting their site like we are and they worked at Amazon.com when we did but they worked day shift so we didn't know them..... small world! This park is on a golf course and about 2 blocks over are the houses on the golf course which are goregous!
We went to a "block party" last Friday night with our friends.....there were about 30-40 people there ..... everyone is so friendly and we met several people. We also were invited to another block party the week before of "our block"...which was nice too to meet our closer neighbors....
We have continued to go to church on Sunday's over in Mercedes which is about 20 miles across the valley....we really like the priest and the atmosphere ..... being Ash Wednesday we went to the church in Mission which is the "town" where we are..... it is an old, old church and the priest was good.... he brings 2 dogs with him to church so there were 2 big labs laying at the altar sleeping! When we walked up we first heard Christian chant music and then came on Johnny Cash over the loud speakers outside! We will probably go to Mercedes one more time this weekend and then go to the church in Mission. We have been going to church and then meeting Larry/Sherry for breakfast or lunch after church. Larry/Sherry are leaving this next week so we will change over here while we are here now that we know where the church is.
I have started another quilt and have been working on that but having some problems with my 1/4" foot....so I had to rip my blocks out I made the other night.... I want to try to get it done before we go back to Ks. so I can have it quilted while we are in Topeka.
Last Saturday, Dennie/Karen and another couple we worked at Amazon with met in Harlingen and went to an "Ocelot fest"....it was a fundraiser for the Laguna Atacosa Wildlife Refuge area.... they had programs of different animals, reptiles etc. We watched an Ocelot program that was refuged and was somewhat trained..... then Dennie/Karen and us dropped off John/Jean back at their rig as they were leaving on Sunday...we then drove to Padre Island for some shrimp at Dirty Al's for dinner! YUMMY!!!!!
Bill and I made a trip over to Mexico last week also..... we got there around 11 and got some of the things on our "list" of needing to get..... we were going to eat later but decided to eat lunch in Mexico so after lunch we started to go back across.... the line was very long and they had 3 lines going and it still took us about 40 minutes to get through customs..... so many Winter texans and the streets were elbow to elbow with people! Nice days really bring out the people ...it had been so rainy and cloudy..everyone had the same idea to get out in the sun and warm weather!
This past Tuesday, we had a "Newmar BBQ".... over at Ron/Nancy's site. They have a large lot and a huge casita..... invited were 20 of our Newmar group.... we had a good time and the weather was cool but we mostly were inside... John/Patsy bought the brats and we all furnished everything else.
So that about does it for now! We are alive and well and waiting for the nice warm days to hopefully come and decide to stay! This has been a crazy winter in all the southern states for warm temps! Guess we just go day by day!
I will post some pictures and hopefully they will be self explanatory to know what they are that we have done!
So until next time!
